Planning France, Switzerland, Italy and Germany in one trip sounds simple until one question appears: Which country should receive your visa application?

Choosing the correct destination is important.

One Country Only

If your trip is entirely to one Schengen country, the application is generally submitted through the competent mission or authorised provider for that destination.

Several Countries

When several Schengen countries are involved, determine the main destination.

The primary destination is normally established by the purpose of the trip or the country where the applicant intends to spend the longest time.

If the stay is genuinely equal and no main destination can otherwise be identified, the first point of entry can determine responsibility.

Example 1

Italy: 7 nights France: 4 nights Switzerland: 3 nights

Main destination: Italy

Example 2

France: 4 nights Spain: 4 nights

Where the purpose and duration are genuinely equal, the first-entry country can become relevant.

What Is the 90/180 Rule?

The short-stay rule normally allows a maximum of 90 days during any rolling 180-day period across the Schengen Area.

It is not simply "90 days every six months."

For every day you intend to remain in Schengen, you need to look backwards over the previous 180 days and count the days spent in the area.

Single Entry vs Multiple Entry

A visa may permit one entry, two entries or multiple entries.

A multiple-entry visa does not automatically mean that you can stay continuously for the entire visa-validity period. You must still follow the authorised duration and relevant short-stay rules.

Can I Enter Through Another Schengen Country?

A valid Schengen visa may normally permit travel within the area subject to the visa conditions and border requirements.

However, your actual travel plan should remain consistent with the genuine purpose and main destination declared in your application.
